Practice mitigation and adaptation in a pluralistic world with many climes and
many cultures. Perhaps as a first ethical approximation, we could follow Kant’s
categorical imperative: “Act only on a maxim that you can at the same time will
                   to become a universal law.”

n What may I hope? We can hope that fears and anxieties that freeze us into
inaction or that tempt us to do too much might be overcome and that a middle
course of climate mitigation and adaptation might emerge—amenable to all, rea-
                   sonable, practical, equitable, and effective.
